Selfkantbahn

The Selfkantbahn is a preserved metre gauge railway just across the German border of our Southern province of Limburg, at the small town of Schierwaldenrath, in pleasant undulating countryside. One day in September 1996, when there was a narrow gauge model railway show in the carriage shed, I was invited by Klaus Olschewski to come down there and look at the model railways and the life-size narrow gauge line outside. They had transferred Franzburg, a beautifully-preserved 0-4-0WT, from another railway in North Germany, to haul the trains that day, although inside the loco shed were a few businesslike looking steam locos, regrettably cold. Anyway, Franzburg came in with a train, was serviced and after some shunting departed with a beautiful train of restored bogie stock. A pleasant change from the British and Dutch preservation scene.

The train waiting in the platform road.

Loco being serviced, then it is off for a spot of shunting. Note the coaling baskets: good modelling detail.

Left: Franzburg silhouetted against the fields. Note the beautiful rolling stock. To the right, a van body rests on chocks… on a transporter wagon meant to take standard gauge stock.

Shunting the train from the van side.

Note the typical round centre buffer on the van.

Waiting for the road…

And off the train goes, with a nice head of steam across the level crossing.
